Japan and the Classical Gold Standard, 1897-1914: Did She Follow the Rules of the Game?

要旨

This paper explores Japanese monetary policy under the classical gold standard (1897–1914), especially the question of whether the Bank of Japan followed the rules of the game. After reviewing the distinguishing features of Japan’s gold standard, the paper shows that the Bank of Japan initially used fiduciary issues to offset movements in monetary gold so as to keep the supply of currency relatively stable but, from around 1909, it mostly used fiduciary issues to accommodate changes in the public’s demand for currency. The Bank of Japan, moreover, tended to raise (cut) the discount rate when monetary gold was decreasing (increasing), although the negative relationship between the two may have weakened somewhat after around 1911. We conclude that, during most of the period of the classical gold standard, Japan followed the rules of the game, challenging the conventional view on the working of the classical gold standard.

テーマ：付加価値構造からみた日本の都道府県格差

要旨：

　本研究は、『県民経済計算』の経済活動別県内総生産および要素所得のデータを用いて、日本の都道府県格差を、付加価値構造から分解し、その傾向を分析したものである。

　データによると、要素所得は、産出額、中間投入、県内総生産（GRDP）、固定資本減耗、県内純生産、税－補助金、県内要素所得、県内雇用者報酬、営業余剰と分類される。

　そこで、分析において、産出額格差を中間投入、県内総生産に分解し、県内総生産格差を固定資本減耗、税－補助金、県内要素所得に分解し、県内要素所得格差を県内雇用者報酬、営業余剰に分解する多重構造とした。

　簡単な結果として、日本の都道府県格差において、県内要素所得格差の占める割合が高いことが分かった。

テーマ：『The Impact of Intergenerational Transfers on the Distribution of Wealth:An International Comparison』

要旨：
In this paper, we analyze detailed data on intergenerational transfers in 4 countries(China, India, Japan, and the United States) from the “Preference Parameters Study of Osaka University,”which was conducted in these 4 countries during all or part of the 2003-2013 period, in order to shed light on the impact of intergenerational transfers on household wealth disparities and on possible reasons for the substantial differences in household wealth disparities among the 4 countries.  Almost all of the evidence we present suggests that intergenerational transfers have a disequalizing impact on household wealth disparities and facilitate the transmission of household wealth disparities from generation to generation in all 4 countries although the magnitude of these effects varies considerably from country to country.  Moreover,the vidence we present sheds considerable light on possible reasons for the substantial differences in household wealth disparities among the 4 countries.

テーマ：『日中韓3国間の自動車部品貿易および物流動向』

要旨：
2014年の世界自動車生産量統計によれば，中国が2,372万台として世界第1位（全世界生産量に占める割合は26.3%），日本は977万台として第3位（同10.2%），韓国は452万台として第5位（同5.0%）を記録した。すなわち，日中韓3国だけで全世界自動車生産量の4割を越えることになる。また，近年の東アジア経済の発展とグローバル市場展開の背景の下で日中韓3国の自動車部品市場も大きく変化してきている。
そこで本稿では，日中韓3国の自動車産業および部品産業の現状を紹介し，3国間自動車部品貿易および物流の動向変化について考察する。具体的では，UNのComtrade統計とOICA（国際自動車工業連合会）データを用いて計量的な分析を行い，日中韓3国間の自動車部品貿易および物流の変容について報告する。

“Unemployment and Infant Health”
Japan has witnessed a continuous decline in birth weight, a key indicator of infant health, over several decades. The present study uses Japanese prefectural panel data from 1975–2010 with five-year intervals to estimate the impact of economic conditions on infant health, with focus on unemployment and contingent employment. Our result finds that both types of employment statuses induce an increase in the share of underweight babies and a decrease in average birth weight. Although our longitudinal data show that the negative impact of parental unemployment on infant health decreases over time and becomes statistically insignificant after 2000, the negative impact of parental contingent employment exists even after 2000. Our results imply that an unfavourable parental employment status could led to the child’s lower outcomes through lower health status at birth.

“Are Daughters Always the Losers in the Chore War?”
We examine the gender gap in housework in Vietnam among siblings aged less than 18 years. We show daughters undertake 5.25 minutes more unpaid housework per day than sons. However, the gender gap in housework is negligible for children aged less than 14 years. A decline in the gender gap at 15 years of age suggests parents eventually begin to consider the education of their daughters. Before then, however, the gender gap increases with age and can be even greater if daughters also engage in paid work.

Economic Impact of Foreign Workers on Economic Growth: Case of Singapore

要旨
The presentation examines the current trends of foreign immigrants in Asia and in particular on the growth of the Singapore economy. The paper also discusses the key labour market trends and the rationale for foreign manpower in the small open economy like Singapore economy. The presentation highlights key simulations of the impact of foreign immigrants for the Singapore economy by Thangavelu (2011) using the dynamic general equilibrium model in terms of wage gap between skilled and unskilled workers and innovation capabilities of the domestic economy. Further, the paper provides evidence of the impact of foreign workers on the efficiency of domestic industries and export competitiveness based on panel data from 1991 to 2005. The presentation will also discusses key policy implications of foreign workers and social welfare on the domestic economy.
